5 Home and Natural Remedies for Toothache
Toothache is a severe pain that you feel in or around your teeth. It is an indication that something is wrong with your oral health. Toothaches should never be ignored as it gets worse over time and can lead to more problems. Though toothaches are not life-threatening, they may lead to serious health conditions.
Initially, you can use the following home remedies to get relief from toothaches:
1. Saltwater rinse
Saline flushing is a simple and effective first-line treatment. Hot water mixed with salt is a natural disinfectant that can help loosen food particles and debris accumulated in the mouth. It can also be used to treat any oral wounds. It can be used as a mouthwash for flossing.
To use this method, mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and use it as a mouthwash for at least 2 minutes.
2. Hydrogen peroxide rinse
Hydrogen peroxide flushing may also help relieve pain and inflammation. In addition to killing bacteria, hydrogen peroxide can also reduce the source of dental plaque and heal bleeding gums.
Make sure to dilute the hydrogen peroxide correctly. For this, 3% hydrogen peroxide is mixed with an equal amount of water and then used as a mouthwash. Make sure you do not swallow it while flossing.
3. Cold compress
You can use cold compresses to relieve any pain you experience, especially if any type of trauma causes toothache. When you apply a cold compress, it will cause the blood vessels in the area to constrict. This reduces the pain. Colds can also reduce swelling and inflammation.
To use this method, take the ice pack wrapped in a towel to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time. You can repeat it every few hours. You can also have ice cream. It will provide you some minutes of relief from severe pain.
4. Peppermint tea bags
Peppermint tea bags can be used to relieve pain and soothe sensitive gums.
To do this, cool the used tea bag before applying it to the affected area. It should still be slightly hot so that it can penetrate further to give you immediate relief.
You can also swap the method and use it to cool down instead of warming the area. To do this, put the used tea bag in the refrigerator for a few minutes to cool it down, and then apply it to the teeth. Peppermint has numerous health benefits so it is always wise to have this ingredient at home.
5. Garlic
Garlic is an important ingredient which is known for many years for its medical properties. Not only can it kill harmful bacteria that cause dental plaque, but it can also relieve pain.
To use it, crush the garlic cloves to make a paste, and then apply it to the affected area. You may wish to add a little salt. Or, you can chew a fresh clove of garlic slowly. Garlic releases an antibacterial compound known as allicin when crushed, chewed, or chopped that would reduce toothache temporarily.
